Contact lenses can offer you great flexibility which in today’s world can be invaluable and they have evolved out of all recognition since their early days in the 1960’s. “When I first qualified in 1985 I seemed to spend a lot of time sorting out patients who were having problems with their lenses“ says Amar. Most people at this time were wearing gas permeable or hard contact lenses.

Nowadays, gas permeable lenses account for approximately 6% of new fittings and most patients choose the soft option, literally. With the advent of disposable soft contact lenses successful contact lens wear is available to most patients.

Disposable contact lenses are probably the most commonly prescribed. They are available on numerous replacement schedules from daily to monthly. They can be prescribed in a variety of prescriptions including spherical, astigmatism, and bifocal. Improved technology now means they are available for extended/overnight wear also.

A new addition to the armoury of vision correction is Orthokeratology. A rigid contact lens is worn overnight to reshape and flatten the cornea. In the morning the lenses are removed and the new shape of the cornea corrects your vision. This only works with some prescriptions but unlike laser refractive surgery is completely reversible.

A contact lens fitting involves a complete eye test, a careful microscopic examination of the front of your eye and corneal topography. This, together with a discussion as to what your specific requirements, ensures that Amar fits you with the most appropriate lens for your lifestyle and needs. You are then given full instructions as how to handle and look after your lenses.
